Qualifications for Certification
At the Georgia Board for Christian Counselors, we believe that those who are called to Christian counseling carry a sacred responsibility—to serve with spiritual discernment, emotional insight, and unwavering integrity. Our certification process ensures that applicants possess both the professional competence and Christ-centered foundation necessary to minister effectively in today’s complex world.
To be considered for certification, applicants must demonstrate evidence of academic training, ministry experience, or practical counseling work that aligns with the ethical and theological standards of Christian counseling. Applicants must meet one or more of the following criteria:
Educational and Theological Foundations

Hold an earned Master’s Degree or higher, preferably in counseling, psychology, theology, or a related field
OR -
Provide documentation of formal ecclesiastical training or ministerial education through a recognized church, seminary, or ministry-based training program
OR -
Show completion of graduate-level coursework or its equivalent in at least one of the following areas:

Counseling or Psychology

Biblical Studies
-
Theology or Christian Doctrine
-
Pastoral or Christian Therapy
-
Temperament Therapy or Faith-Based Modalities
-
Professional and Ministry Experience

Demonstrate a minimum of two years of experience actively practicing as a Christian counselor, pastoral counselor, or therapist within a ministry, church, nonprofit, or private practice setting
OR -
Be recognized by a credible organization, denomination, or agency as a Christian counselor, ordained minister, licensed therapist, or ministry leader within the State of Georgia
Additional Requirements for All Applicants

Submit a minimum of five professional or character references, with at least three from individuals familiar with your counseling or ministry work

Provide a written narrative outlining your background in counseling and/or Christian ministry, including your approach to integrating faith into your work

Complete a telephone interview with a representative of the Board following receipt and verification of your application materials
